You can hardly call the break since the end of last term a holiday for the teachers and parents. The old building has been repainted, a new store room has been built and electricity and glass windows have been installed in the new classrooms. With a couple of weeks to go head teacher, Ernestina, realised she didn’t have enough tables and chairs for so many pupils so she has been writing to the council and the universities to see if they can help out. I don’t know if they have responded but I do know the teachers will get by somehow so nothing can spoil the new term.
I find it quite hard to believe the school has grown so big or to believe that this year IMFA celebrates its 25th anniversary. We had planned to have a celebration with an exhibition and a few drinks but we kept coming back to the fact that money spent here is money not spent there and money spent there – as 176 small people will vouch – goes a long, long way.
We are welcoming back Thelma Calderon as one of the nine teachers. Thelma the first teacher we employed . As you can see below she will be enjoying a much brighter and inspirational work place than in 1992.

We are still a group of only 6 people but we have been joined by over 30 sponsors and dozens and dozens of quiz goers. In terms of class rooms and teachers I think (hope!), we have reached a maximum size but we still need to improve facilities and the salaries of the teachers we already have. Our next immediate project is a moveable sliding room divider so the children in the Primary school classes are not disturbed by the class next door.
Did I say 176? I have just received an email from Ernestina reporting that 245 children are now registered. That’s nearly twice the number we had last year. I never thought we’d have to start worrying about class sizes! If you had not realised already this is a serious commitment so please carry on your support and encourage others to sign up as Sponsors (visit www.imfa.org.uk), make a one off donation or come to a quiz. Thanks as always for your amazing support.
